Henry Ford Health (HFH), founded in 1915, is Michigan’s second-largest nonprofit healthcare system, providing high-quality care at over 550 sites. Since its inception, HFH has promoted clinical advancements and community health programs all over the state. Henry Ford Innovations (HFI) was established in 2012 with a focus on engineering the future of healthcare. HFI works to drive growth in medical technology for providers and patients alike.

With rising temperatures and increasingly dangerous weather conditions, becoming eco-friendly has become an imperative objective for a sustainable future. HFH has pledged to reduce emissions for the 5 legacy hospitals. HFH has had no single place to measure its fleet and commuting emissions.

To support this commitment, the HFI Sustainability Fleet Dashboard (SFD) provides a centralized information system to track company-related emissions through an easy-to-use web application.

The SFD tracks Scope 1 emissions from HFH’s vehicle fleet and Scope 3 emissions from employee commutes. The SFD calculates estimated employee emission usage based on factors such as vehicle type and commute distance to assist in the tracking of carbon emissions utilized by the company.

The dashboard displays various real-world, up-to-date graphs for each of these scopes that visualize emission trends. This enables HFH statisticians and sustainability experts to use dynamic charts, data filters, and readily available tabular datasets to understand the impact of company emissions on the sustainability goals of HFH.

Our system furthers HFH’s sustainability goals by providing a centralized view of the impact of emission trends.

The SFD is hosted on an MSU virtual machine, with a React and Chart.js front end and a Flask back end alongside a SQL database to handle emissions calculations and routing.
