Delta Dental of Michigan, Ohio and Indiana is a major insurance provider in the tri-state area. In addition to providing quality insurance coverage, Delta Dental develops enterprise solutions to increase their claim review process’s efficiency.
Delta Dental processes hundreds of millions of insurance claims a year. While most claims go through an automatic review process, many need to be manually reviewed. This review process is inherently time consuming and inefficient as reviewers must cycle through documents to examine any conditions that may appear.
The Dental Image Analysis Toolkit (DIAT) solves this problem by providing an initial diagnosis performed by AI tools that reviewers can analyze and validate. This gives reviewers an initial understanding of what claims include to help streamline the manual review process, saving time and effort for review staff.
Through an integrated workflow built into the DIAT web application, reviewers can claim a case that has been pre-analyzed by AI and verify the dental conditions present. An all-in-one presentation of the case is provided to reviewers, where they can view an image in question, the possible dental conditions, and a summary of the AI’s decisions.
To help keep track of the numerous reviews, reviewers are given an area to write notes for future analysis. Furthermore, once a claim has been reviewed, its information is stored in case the claim needs to be revisited.
The DIAT streamlines the claim review process to help reviewers process claims faster by leveraging modern technology combined with the experience of a dental insurance reviewer.
The application’s front end is built in Angular with Bootstrap and the back end is implemented with Java Quarkus with various tuned LLMs, like MedGemma, being used for the analysis engine.
